About the Exam

What is PET-CT?

PET-CT combines positron emission tomography (PET) with CT in a single scanner. PET shows how tissues function at the cellular level; CT shows where those changes are anatomically. The combination is especially powerful for cancer staging, treatment response, and detecting recurrence.

Key advantages

  • Detects disease at the cellular level — often before structural change
  • Combines functional + anatomic imaging in one exam
  • Critical tool for oncology staging and treatment response
Common Indications

Why your doctor may order a PET-CT

  • Cancer staging and treatment monitoring
  • Evaluation for metastatic disease
  • Brain imaging — epilepsy, dementia evaluation
  • Differentiating scar tissue from active disease
Patient Experience

What to expect

  1. 1

An IV is placed and a small dose of radiotracer is injected.

  2. 2

You'll rest quietly for 45–60 minutes while the tracer distributes.

  3. 3

The scan itself takes 40–60 minutes.

  4. 4

You may be asked to hold your breath during portions of the CT.

  5. 5

    Plan for 2–3 hours total.

How to prepare

  • Fast for 6 hours before your appointment (water and necessary medications are fine). A staff member will contact you the day before your appointment with instructions specific to your exam.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise the day before.
  • Diabetic patients should follow special instructions provided at scheduling.
  • Wear warm, comfortable clothing — staying warm helps tracer distribution.

Important Information

After your scan, you'll be mildly radioactive for several hours. Limit prolonged close contact with pregnant women, infants, and young children for the rest of the day.
